Mommying from the Heart

Tylenol Failed…But Prayer DID NOT!

February is usually a month full of celebrations for the Whitaker house. My husband, mother-in-law, and sister-in-laws birthdays are in the same week. Then there’s Valentine’s day, which is when my husband proposed (I was shocked and had no idea it was going to happen by the way), along with it being Black History Month! 🤎❤️💚✊🏾💛🖤So we have a good time all month, to say the least.

However, this time around February brought joy and celebration along with stress, worry, fear, and sickness. While traveling for their birthday, both boys ended up in urgent care 3 days apart. What started as very high fevers turned into an ear infection and viral infection. My youngest scared me the most. His fever spiked overnight and hit 105 at one point. We used two thermometers and kept getting readings between 103-105. I made an appointment at 11 that night for us to get into urgent care at 8 am the next morning. But what was I to do in the meantime? My husband and I are watching him like a hawk, giving him Tylenol that wasn’t working to bring the fever down, and trying to stay positive in front of him, masking our worry. You see, in our 6 years of being parents, our children haven’t ever really been sick but maybe a handful of times between the two of them with a cold. This was the worst and scariest for us. Should we take him to the ER? Go to urgent care in the morning? Throw him in the tub? Give him more meds? All these questions were swimming around in our heads and in the room.

But you know what I did also? I put my phone down as I began to look for remedies to decrease his fever, and began to pray over him. I prayed until he stopped being restless, and my worries went away. Eventually, the medication kicked in and the fever dropped, and we all got some rest before our morning appointment.

This situation taught me so much about myself as a mom and praying woman. There are times when we don’t know the answer to life’s struggles, and uncertainties and we are quick to phone a friend, ask Siri or Google, or just sit in a corner and worry ourselves to death before we ever think to TRY JESUS!

I told myself, “STOP. You’re not about to go down this rabbit hole on Google and worry yourself sick. Put the phone down and pray.”

It is my desire that in everything I do, I pray for clarity and direction before I move. It is then that God gives me the peace that surpasses all understanding and the discernment to move and operate in His will. So when I am faced with fear…PRAY. When I’m approached with new opportunities…PRAY. When doubt sneaks up on me…PRAY. When I don’t know what else to do in a situation…PRAY. When I need direction…PRAY.

Prayer has quickly become my default for everything. And I’m seeing the benefits and blessings it’s having on my life. It is my hope that you too find that PRAYER is the answer. Because those sweet authentic and humbling words are exactly what God wants to hear from us. He expects it and looks forward to that intimate time with Him. “Will you trust Me?” I hear Him saying. ABSOLUTELY!!

Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

Mark 11:24

🙏🏾💜Enjoy this beautiful reminder of the POWER OF A PRAYING WOMAN!💜

We all know how powerful prayers from a God-fearing woman are. I pray you hold on to this scripture and sweet reminder, and the next time you are stricken with fear, doubt, uncertainty, confusion, and opportunity, you’ll immediately go to God in prayer and get all there is you need to operate at your best with those you know and love.

Oh! And P.S….Tylenol has gotten kicked to the curb in the Whitaker house. Ibuprofen is the GOAT of FEVER KNOCK OUT! Too bad it took us 6 years to figure it out. 🤣 🤷🏾‍♀️
