Frequently Asked Questions and Tidbits

What’s the most common question you are asked?

People ask, “Why are you a stay-at-home mom and homeschooling?” Before having my first son, Duce, who was born with a heart condition, I was a middle school teacher and before that I provided social services to kids as young as elementary all the way up to high school graduates. I loved the work I did with youth, however, my son’s health led me on a new journey that I have loved and embraced with much gratitude and humility. I’m an educator by trade, so homeschooling was a no brainer for me, as I know all too well the disparities that occur in the school system with children of color, especially boys. I want to make sure that the whole child is being educated and whatever sparks their interest is explored and embraced.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on a new functional skills rhyming book on potty training and book 2 and 3 of the Scary Dinosaur and Stinky Series! We are in the illustration stage and it is so fun! I cannot wait to share new characters and adventures with you!

Why write in the Children’s Book genre?

As a storyteller and educator, I am a firm believer that reading takes children on adventures that unlock endless possibilities to their hopes and dreams. I love how creative and adventurous you can get with the stories, and then you have the ability to bring them to life with beautiful illustrations.

What are you most proud of?

Being a mother to my boys, Duce and Elisha. It is the most challenging and rewarding job I have ever had, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. They have taught me so much about myself, and have stretched my faith and talents to no end. I am so thankful to have a husband who not only supports and encourages me being home with our boys, but also my career as a writer.

What is your dream job?

I can honestly say that I am living my dream job of being an author! Ever since my teens I have wanted to write stories and share them with the world, but I never was given the time and opportunity until now. One other dream of mine is to open my own homeschool one day to educate and serve other children!

What is your writing process?

As a stay-at-home, homeschooling momma, my writing process is a little all over the place. I write and work during what I call the “Sleeping Hours.” That’s when the boys nap and after everyone in bed and sleep for the night. It’s the quietest, so I am able to gather all my thoughts and create! Throughout the day I may jot down an idea, character or storyline that I can dive into later in more detail.

Do you have any hobbies?

I have many! I love blogging, cooking, baking, crafting, decorating, reading, traveling and trying new adventures with my family. I also love a good dancing workout class where I can learn a routine and burn some calories at the same time!

What’s your favorite holiday?

Easter! I love what it represents, the Resurrection of Jesus and his sacrifice and promise. I enjoy worshiping and celebrating with family and friends, and gifting my boys with cool gifts and enjoyable activities and crafts!
